Wish I had made this purchase years ago. I just unpacked and cleaned an Argus " The Brick" Rangefinder circa 1948. Along with my mid 80's AE-1 and my order of BW film from Amazon I'm ready to relegate my digital photos to my smart phone. Next step med format 120. Harry Horenstein's writing kept me interested and I have returned and highlighted many of the tips/lesson in the book. Time to find a light meter and get outside.
this is a very good textbook that describes standard composition rules and selection of subjects and has considerable chapters in establishing total range of the final print in a wet darkroom using a larger with burning and dodging techniques, selection of papers, and filters. It has minimal relevance in the modern digital ink jet printer scenarios. I purchased it as a recommended guide to improve black-and-white photography skills but it is more relevant to a bye going error of wet chemistry Process. it must of been THE classic book in that era

This book is the assigned text for a university class in dark room photography. In retirement, I began with digital photography. Encountering photographers who experienced film photography caused me to enroll in this class to learn about film photography and how it might help my digital practice. The book is very detailed in explaining the key aspects of film photography, understanding what preceded digital photography, and its amazing technological advancement.
I have another book on the same subject. It covers more and it offers more detail in almost every subject it handles.And, it made me feel helpless when I tried to read it. I said, "no, I cannot do this whole processing, printing and whatever thing"!Now, after reading Horenstein's book, I think I CAN do it! I must do it! That, I call a big difference.In short: This is a beautifully prepared, detailed guideline for entering into the conventional B&W photography world.It has almost nothing that could be useful for digital photography.I say "almost" because there are many beautiful photographs by some leading photographers within (all related to the subject matter, by the way).Watching those can be inspiring even for those shooting digital only :)In fact, its title says it all (this has become a rather unusual event, lately): "A Basic Manual".It handles every imaginable subject with, authority and care; from film ISO to mounting prints.Suitable even for those who have started photography just recently.I recommend this book without any reservation to the small, specific subset of B&W film photographers who intend to print their own images in a darkroom.
A few years ago I did a 1:1 study with a retired fashion photographer who recommended this book. Even though I have been working in b/w for over 30 years I find the book useful. Nice to have all the basic info in one place and this book does that!! As to a lack of "artistic suggestions" in the book...well I have a huge library of texts that were purchased to help me learn the "art" of photogaphy. My retired friend taught me a valuable lesson, learn the technical from a book then shoot, shoot, shoot!! That's about the only way you will learn the "art" of it. I've been asked to teach an intro to b/w photography this summer and this will be the textbook for it.
I purchased this book for a college course in b&w photography. It had a lot of basic information and infographics. There where a lot of photos that illastrated the lessons discussed. I did not think they had enough covered for a "basic" topic book.
What a fantastic book. This is definitely a must have for anyone moving beyond a point and shoot camera. It covers quite a bit more than just "black & white" photography as the title suggests.
