We researched intensively before we actually bought our pair of gerbils (gerbils shouldn't be alone, they get very depressed. Same sex pairs do better, so you don't end up with multiplying gerbils.) And this book was the most informative, and my 9 yr old child had no problem understanding it. It even had a great section on how to tame a gerbil that nips. In a few days, our one nipper stopped and has never nipped again. We've bought about 3 of these books now because we wore the first one out and sometimes my child will loan out a copy to her friends who want to know more about caring for a gerbil, and we make sure we always have one on hand at home. The only other advice I'd give a would-be gerbil owner is that you need much more space per gerbil than the cruel but cute cages in the pet shop have, and ask all your friends and neighbors to save toilet paper tubes because gerbils chew like crazy to wear down their always-growing teeth. Also be careful that the potty sand you use isn't too fine or it's bad for their lungs. Oh, and either join a 4H rodent club and/or a gerbil care and support facebook group, the advice of long-term gerbil owners is invaluable in the middle of the night when your gerbil does something wonky and you're thinking of taking them to the vet. Saved us a few vet trips at least, for something that was worrisome to us, but turned out is not a problem for gerbils.
I'm so happy to see that Donna Anastasi's COMPLETE GUIDE TO GERBIL CARE is still available, for in my opinion it's the best one-volume resource out there. The author really knows her stuff, and is happy to impart her wisdom to the care and love of these beguiling, supremely inquisitive little creatures.
This book has great content but the way its made is terrible. It was a gift to my grandson and the first time he and his dad sat down to read it..the pages came loose with each turn of the page. Im so disappointed.
My 8 year old has been wanting gerbils for months. We told him he had to read and be able to talk to us about them and their care. He (and the rest of the family) have now read several books. This was by far the best. My son made the decisions about cages, types, sex etc on his own after reading this book. He could discuss care issues and that he was not ready for breeding, wanted 2 females and what he would have to do to care for them.In comparison to other books, this has more useful information, is more complete, better photos and after three days with the gerbils has already answered multiple questions.If you can only get one book then this should be it.
The other reviewers are right--Donna Anastasi knows gerbils! This delightful book is so much fun to read (again and again) that it would potentially convince anyone that gerbils are the pets for them. Best of all, it's 176 pages, so it's packed full of information--from tips to games. As a result of reading this book I became a fan not only of gerbils, but also of Ms. Anastasi (you will, too!), whose love for these furry little rodents is evident throughout the work. Imagine my delight when I adopted a pair and found out they're great-granddaughters of her gerbils!If you only get one gerbil care book--make this one it.
Great, informative book. Rented it from the library for my daughter who is wanting a gerbil. She thought she knew everything but admitted that there was a lot that her 11 year old brain did not know about gerbils and actually thanked me for making her read it. She felt that buying the book for reference would be a smart idea before the actual purchase of a gerbil. Best book we came across thus far concerning gerbils as pets.
This has been quite helpful to me in navigating the world of gerbil care. I just adopted a pair of young timid gerbils, and this book had a section for me on how to get them used to me and feeling safer. Now my gerbils are adjusting nicely and much more friendly/happy in their environment!I haven't read many of the other gerbil care books available, but this one is good for giving tips to the beginner like me.
Great book for beginners! I like that it gives you exact instructions for splitting a cage and the proper proportions of protein and fat for a gerbil. I quickly learned that most foods are not fit for gerbils, even if they say they are!
